Maggie McDavid, born right here in Austin, Texas, is an up and coming artist you need to know. Otherwise known as MAAGS, she began songwriting from an early age and sang for a local traveling choir group. More recently, she has received attention from The X-Factor and played the Bumble stage at SXSW 2018. Additionally, she has just released her first official single called “Born to Shine” that is out everywhere now! The song is a melodious synth-pop tune that features McDavid’s engaging vocals.
BUHU is the up and coming electronic band you need to know! Their first studio album Relationshapes really put them on the map in 2016. Known for their powerful multidimensional compositions and emotional appeal, BUHU knows how to make an immersive sound. In 2017, they released two dynamite singles ‘La Truth’ and ‘Franny’ that showcased their ability to create a provocative ever unfolding sound. Now, they have just released a new track called ‘Yew’ through Parisian label Kitsuné Musique. The song is an awe-inspiring piece that is as dynamic as it is cohesive.
On Vinyl had the pleasure of working with local artist and illustrator Adrián Oviedo for our South Austin Local Showcase. Adrián demonstrated his amazing creative mind by turning the bands into animated characters to create one of the dopest showcase posters we have seen to date. The imagery on the poster really set the tone for the show itself, and encapsulated the very reason as to why supporting local artists is not only important, but a good investment. A day after releasing their second full-length album, Fair City Fire had one hell’uva album release show at Stubb’s BBQ. The guys got the night rolling with the new title track “Shake Your Bones.” An appropriate name for an album that is both in your face and delicate at times. Lead singer and guitarist, Brian Wolff, took everyone in attendance on an emotional roller coaster. Whether it was singing the impassioned song “Hold on to You” or shredding on guitar while having a headbanging contest with the front row, Wolff showcased his dynamic stage presence.
It is not hard to see the great chemistry Swimming with Bears has while up on stage together. Their last show at Stubb’s Jr. displayed their great chemistry which transforms into raw energy when they perform. An energy that is as dynamic as it is powerful. Throughout the show, you could hear traces of alt-rock, pop, and even reggae at times. They opened up the show with their latest single French Girls, a catchy pop tune that is sure to be a hit. Spring might have just begun, but TØMA’s new track “Book of Yesterday” screams summertime! If you’re like me, there’s no bad time of year for a rhythmic tune featuring sugary synths and bubbly guitar riffs. With an almost addictive melody, this song is sure to get your attention. Think Tame Impala meets Family of the Year. A compelling tune that is both playful and thought-provoking. Is it too early to say song of the Summer?
Hooka Hey is back and better than ever with their new single Herlock. This marks the band’s first release since their 2015 EP– Untamed. If you haven’t heard about these local rockers, they’re known for their ominous and smoky jams that just know how to get your attention. Herlock is no exception, the song is driven by an unforgettable riff that is sure to get your heart pulsating. Hooka Hey has also just released a new music video for the single that is as thought-provoking as it is haunting. Herlock is the first release from their upcoming album War Cry that will be released in May.
If Shivery Shakes’ first album Three Waves and a Shake is any indication, the future is bright for this up and coming band. “Recurring Dreams“, the first song off the album, really sets the tone; the opening riff and whistle immediately paints a charming sonic picture. Airy guitar riffs match perfectly with the rhythmic drum beats to really bring the song to life. Each song brings a refreshing feeling almost like a warm day at the beach. The Austin-based trio features lead vocalist Alex Dugan, Mic Vredenburgh on guitar and electronics, and David Grayson on drums. The buzz on Culture Wars has been building since the release of their self-titled EP which debuted on Earmilk. Lead single “Money (Gimmie, Gimmie)” premiered on PopMatters, and Culture Wars was also featured in Apple Music’s “Breaking Alternative” and “Breaking Rock” official playlists.
