Local indie/bluesy funk band Kev Bev and the Woodland Creatures recently sat down with On Vinyl to share their insight, joy, and eclectic spin on what it is that makes the infectious “Kev Bev Sound.” Highlights from the intimate 1-on-9 conversation include a sneak peak into their upcoming album releases, obscure musical influences, and the paramount pursuit of happiness.
Kev Bev and The Woodland Creatures have been spreading their experimental R&B/electro funk sound throughout the ATX music scene for nearly five years, and this 9-piece band is digging deeper than ever to shake things up, keep things fresh, and bring the Kev Bev experience to the far-out masses.
Soaked in talent and dripping in their benevolence, this powerful musicianship entity is headed by the Ma and Pa of funk: Kev Bev and Candy Collins. Happily married and adorable AF, these two are the creative ring leaders that conduct the circus of groove deliverance. With their direction, the influx of creative inspiration and influence from their 7 other band members is produced flawlessly. As an entire unit, the Kev Bev sound is one that is unforgettable, charming, and contagious.
The depth of diverse musicianship behind this band alone is one that stacks the stage with reasons for you to get your asses up and out to a live show. Classically trained violinists/pianists, multiple percussion sections, horns, synths, and dancers are just a glimpse into one of their live performances. The sound is tight, the energy is authentic, and the true love for their craft is radiated continuously.
We had the privilege to sit down with the band outside of Threadgill’s World Headquarters (pre-performance) and discuss their musical influences, how a 9-piece band can decide on a ‘sound’, and more.
Kev Bev and The WC are an extremely talented and diverse group of artists, and the music they deliver is developed within a democracy of genuine openness and the willingness to give any idea or inspiration a try. This explains, in part, the extreme variation of genres you experience in their music.
With influences from Arcade Fire and Super Furry Animals to Willie Nelson and Fleetwood Mac, the overall genre and vibe of Kev Bev and The WC is hard to pinpoint at times; though the mixture works, mostly due to the extreme skill of the musicians and their unique ability to hyper-mesh styles. Additional influences include Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Sly & The Family Stone, and Marvin Gaye. This all rides together in on a funk/bluesy wave with subtle undertones of indie rock flare and delicate, electronic sound seduction.
They all truly believe that their influences play such a large part into their sound and emotion, and being welcoming to one another for creation is essential.
“We are a musical entity,” professes their drum kit slayer, Adrian. “We together produce the Kev Bev sound; when we all combine our influences and personalities, we bare ourselves for the song, and the song becomes all of us.”
In addition to providing the beat and philosophical quotes, Adrian is the sole creator of all the band’s graphic art; using an extremely unique style mix of street art and cartoon realism, he attributes a recognizable design entity to the band’s image.
Though it is the collective unit that delivers the Kev Bev experience, every single band member is an immensely essential piece and platform for the band. We advise you to check out the Kev Bev and The WC website and all of their social media pages for a closer introduction to the eclectic and funk thick family.
Or, better yet: Come out to a live show and meet them yourselves. They really are as kind as they are rad.
Fresh off their European Tour, Kev Bev and the Woodland Creatures are stronger and more illustrious than ever before; playing in the Spain music festival, Pueblos Blancos, for thousands of people placed a glow on their faces and fire in their hearts.
“You’re never too old to follow your dreams,” beams Candy, overflowing with charisma and genuine pride for her musical family.
Much like any other band, the Kev Bev family aims to perform on a global scale; hitting as many people as they can along the way with music, joy, and a lasting experience. In order to book large tours and build up a sizable fan base, progressing bands need a consistently growing catalog.
Much to our delight, they have been working on just that.
Kev Bev and The WC have ecstatically confirmed with On Vinyl the production and future release of two new albums, set to hit the interwebs and fanbases in early 2018. The first release will be a LIVE album recorded in Austin’s very own St. Elmo Brewing Company, followed by the launch of a live video recording of the St. Elmo performance in support of the record.
Soon to follow will be Kev Bev and the WCs’ highly anticipated second full length studio album, made available to the public this upcoming February.
After the double dose of tender love and funk settle in your stomachs, Kev Bev and The Woodland Creatures will be working on hitting the road for a southern tour in Spring/Summer of 2018; dates to later be announced.
However, with two amazing local brewery shows rapidly approaching, you won’t have to wait until the New Year to commit to your resolution of supporting more local music. Plus, another reason to drink local is always appreciated.
Kev Bev and The WCs will be headlining for the Austin Music Foundation’s hosted event: First Saturday Special on Dec. 1st from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Independence Brewery.
Skip a Saturday, and you can get down with the Woodland Creatures once again at Oskar Blues Brewing Company, where they will be playing from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on December 15th.
“Keep getting better at what you do,” endears Kev Bev, closing the session. “For me, music has always been a therapy. It’s the greatest gift that we have; to share what helps us to feel good, in hopes of helping others to find happiness in their lives.”
