Spider House celebrates 20 years of business with monumental festival

Spider House is quintessentially Austin–the perfect combination of quirky and weird to keep Austinite’s coming back time and time again. The outdoor patio alone has earned Spider House national attention from travel and destination blogs. Whether you’ve been to one of their poetry slams, cramming in a last minute study session, or just enjoying a cocktail under the patio’s twinkling, Christmas lights, you can agree this place feels like home–which is why it has undoubtedly become one of Austin’s most acclaimed venues.

On August 20 starting at 2 p.m., Spider House Café and Ballroom will celebrate their 20th anniversary with a bang! The festivities will run until 2 a.m. the next day, and features live music, a giant inflatable water slide, Tito’s dunk tank, Lone Star corn hole, and some stellar drink specials. This event is open to all ages. There will also be a grand prize drawing at 9:45 p.m. on the Main Patio Stage.

In typical Spider House fashion, the lineup is superb. Click here to check out the featured artists.

Since its humble beginnings in 1996, Spider House Cafe and Ballroom has really elevated itself to a nationally-recognized hotbed for art and music. Not to mention their drinks (alcoholic or not) are quite good, even for Austin’s standard.

In an interview with The Austinot, Spider house owner Conrad Bejarano commented on how European cafes served as cultural centers. His vision, therefore, is  “to create a place where we [he and co-owner John Dorgan] could bring together different cultures and creative types in a positive environment, where people would feel encouraged to be themselves.”

The event will be hosed at Spider House and feature live performance from their three stages–the Main Patio Stage, the 29th Street Stage (also known as the Chapel Stage) and the Spider House Ballroom Stage. I’d highly recommend checking out the lineup before hand to avoid scheduling errors with overlapping performances.

The event itself is completely free, so come out next weekend and show your support for one of Austin’s most beloved coffee shop and performance venues. This one is bound to be one for the books!
